Summer is one of the most popular times to buy a home, and for good reason. More homes tend to be available, giving buyers a wider selection to choose from. And with more options on the market, it’s often easier to find a home that checks your boxes, whether that’s the right location, layout or features. Conversation pits first became popular in the 1960s and 1970s, transforming living rooms into spaces built around connection and comfort. Characterized by sunken seating areas set a step or two below the main floor, the pits were a symbol of modern luxury, appearing in some of the eras’ most celebrated homes. The most iconic example is the Miller House in Indiana, designed by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard in 1957, whose plush sunken square is often credited with launching the trend.

The appeal was social. by dropping the seating below floor level and wrapping it inward, designers created an intimate, enclosed atmosphere that pulled people together and softened the boundaries of a room. They fell out of fashion by the 1980s, partly over practical concerns like safety, accessibility, and the difficulty of remodeling around a hole in the floor.

Now they are returning. After decades of minimalist interiors, homeowners and designers are gravitating back toward warmer, more tactile spaces with layered textures and ambient lighting. Part of the revival’s draw is a craving for screen-free, face-to-face gathering spots, a dedicated place to sit together rather than around a televisions.
